Getting started

Do I need an account?
No Landfall username or password is required. Open the app and press play. Optional Premium purchases are managed by your Apple Account.
Why does Landfall ask to track?
Only to measure whether a Meta ad led to an install or a subscriber. Landfall sends Meta an app-activation event, an event when a Premium offer screen is shown, and your original Premium purchase (a trial start or paid subscription: product id, price, currency, and StoreKit transaction id). Renewals, plan changes, restores, refunds, and Family Sharing purchases are not sent, and neither are your reading, searches, listening, notes, or conversations. You can decline without losing any feature.
What does it cost?
Landfall Christianity opens with a short demo you can try before deciding. After that, Landfall Premium is required to use the app: $2.99 a month, or $29.99 a year with 7 days free for eligible new subscribers. Premium includes every finished audiobook, a monthly allowance of Talk shared across books, podcasts and personas, reading-level rewrites, and People profiles. You can also bring your own verified OpenAI key for cloud AI features. Cancel anytime in App Store settings.
What books are included?
Landfall Christianity ships a shelf of public-domain classics and sacred texts chosen for this edition — each cleaned up, properly chaptered, and opening on its first real page — and a release-controlled library of more public-domain books and poems from the same tradition. Many titles carry a finished Landfall Studio audiobook, and Premium includes every one of them.
Can I add my own books?
Yes — tap Add a book in the library and pick a Word document (.docx), Markdown, or plain-text file. It becomes a full citizen: read aloud, notes, levels, everything.

Listening

What voice reads to me?
Choose OpenAI · Marin for natural cloud narration, or download Apple's Zoe (Premium) for free offline narration. On your iPhone, open Settings → Accessibility → Read & Speak → Voices → English (US) → Zoe → Zoe (Premium), tap the cloud, and wait for the download to finish. Return to Landfall and open Reading Voice; it checks automatically and lists every compatible Premium voice you downloaded. Zoe remains the recommended choice. Landfall never changes your selected voice on its own.
Which books have finished studio audio?
Look for the small headphones mark in Books. Open that book, tap … → Book audio, and choose Landfall Studio Reading. You can stream it immediately or download it for offline listening. Finished editions stay synced to the text and use no Premium minutes. Books without the mark still have live narration.
Does it keep reading with the screen locked?
Yes. Lock the phone, pocket it, do the dishes — the reading continues in the background until you stop it.
The audio cut out in a tunnel / on the subway.
OpenAI narration pauses and offers Retry rather than changing voices on its own. Tapping Retry continues from the same place when the connection returns. A downloaded Zoe (Premium) voice needs no connection at all.
Where did the text go while it reads?
The page follows the voice — the current sentence is highlighted as it's spoken. If you scroll away, a Back to reading button returns you to the live line.

Talk — the AI companion

What is Talk?
Stop anywhere and say what you think. The companion knows the exact passage you just heard, can push back, explain, or search the whole book. It's a conversation, out loud, with something that has read what you're reading.
How do I keep something I said?
Say “note that” mid-conversation. Your thought is pinned to the exact line (or, in a podcast, the exact minute) that caused it — in your words.
Does Talk work in podcasts too?
Yes. Jam labels what it actually knows as Full transcript, Current excerpt, or Description only. If a transcript is unavailable, it says that it cannot verify the hosts' exact wording. Notes land on the timestamp.
What is Apple On-Device Jam?
On compatible iPhones, it is a free, private conversation route powered on the phone. It can discuss the passage or excerpt Landfall shows it, works without a Landfall account, and does not send that conversation to Landfall or OpenAI.
Is the AI always right?
No. AI conversations and rewrites are generated by a model and can be wrong or incomplete. They're a reading companion — not doctrine, scholarship, or counsel.
Does Talk need the OpenAI key?
Talk can use an available Premium text allowance or your own OpenAI key. Note tidying remains BYO-key only unless the app says otherwise.

People

Who appears in People?
Selected authors and major characters from books in your library. Landfall uses reviewed book context and cited sources to build each profile; unresolved or ambiguous identities are not published.
Am I talking to the literal person?
No. Every conversation is clearly labelled as an AI persona inspired by the author or character. It can still be vivid and useful, but it is an interpretation, not the literal person or a claim of private, divine, or historical authority.
Does People remember our conversations?
Yes. Each person's transcript and memory remain separate and are stored on your iPhone. You can clear the conversation or delete a saved person at any time.
Does People record me?
Not by default. A shareable recording is created only when you tap Record.

Notes

Where are my notes?
Pinned inside the book at the exact line where you spoke them. Open the Notes panel from the reader to see them all, jump to any, or delete.
Do voice notes need the AI key?
No. Spoken notes are transcribed on-device by Apple's speech recognition and always work — even in airplane mode. The optional key adds a tidying pass that cleans up the transcription.
Can I get my notes out?
Yes — export the whole book to a Word document with every note placed in the margin where it belongs. Your commentary, portable.

Reading levels

What are reading levels?
Any book can be rewritten at Plain English, Grade 8, or Young readers level — the whole book, chapter by chapter, checked for faithfulness as it converts. Dense Victorian translations become hearable.
Do I lose the original?
Never. The original is always kept, you can switch levels inside the reader mid-book, and your notes stay anchored to the right place in every version.
How do I convert a book?
Tap Reading level on the book's card in your library, pick a level, and it converts with an available Premium text allowance or your OpenAI key. The selected payer is preserved if the work resumes later.

Podcasts, For You & the daily digest

What is For You?
For You puts a visual recommendation shelf above Today’s Picks. It ranks the finite daily digest and new episodes from shows you follow using the listening history stored on this iPhone. The ranking stays on-device and does not create a server-side listening profile.
What are Today’s Picks?
Every morning Landfall reads the top podcast charts in every category — about a thousand shows, most never filed under “religion” — and keeps the few episodes that sit with the big questions. It's finite. You can finish it.
Can I filter it?
Yes — by tradition: Buddhist, Christian, Hindu, Indigenous, Interfaith, Jewish, Muslim, Secular, Stoic, or all of them.
Can I follow my own shows?
Yes. Search any podcast, follow it, and its new episodes appear under Following. Listened keeps your history; Charts lets you browse.
Does the digest need the AI key?
No — it's computed once for everyone and delivered as a plain file. It needs an internet connection to refresh, nothing else.

Offline & downloads

What works offline?
Reading with a downloaded Apple Premium voice works completely offline. Landfall recommends Zoe (Premium); the steps are under Reading Voice. Podcast episodes can also be downloaded for the plane.
What is an audiobook edition?
Some included books may offer a finished, fixed performance by a credited narrator. Open the book’s menu and choose Book audio. You can stream the edition without using AI minutes or download it to this iPhone. Downloads continue while Landfall is in the background or the iPhone is locked. Landfall uses the edition you chose and never silently swaps narrators.
What happens when Premium narration is unavailable?
Landfall pauses and offers Retry. It never silently changes to an Apple voice. If you intentionally select a downloaded Apple Premium voice, that voice reads offline without using Premium minutes.

Landfall Premium

What is included each month?
Landfall Premium includes every published finished audiobook and 30 minutes of Talk each month, shared across books, podcasts, authors, and characters. Supporting transcript context, profile research, and memory are included. Talk stops at the limit, so there are no AI overage charges. Settings shows the remaining Talk time and reset date.
Can I use my own OpenAI key instead?
Yes, for eligible book and podcast cloud features. Landfall shows whether an operation uses Your OpenAI key or Premium and keeps that route fixed through retries. Research and Talk with authors and characters remain Premium-only.

The OpenAI key

Why bring my own key?
It provides a direct device-to-provider route independent of Premium. Your key never passes through Landfall's service, and you control the provider spend.
How do I get one?
Create one at platform.openai.com (API keys section), add a small amount of credit, and paste the key into Landfall — on the last page of onboarding or in the reader's ⋯ menu any time.
What does usage cost?
OpenAI bills your account directly, and costs vary with the model and the amount of text or audio used. Landfall shows an estimate before larger operations and never moves an operation from your key to Premium during a retry.
Where is my key stored?
In your iPhone's Keychain, sent only to OpenAI, directly. Remove it any time in Settings — the rest of Landfall keeps working.

Your data

What do you collect about me?
No ads appear inside Landfall. Optional, consent-based install attribution is limited to the Meta activation, offer-screen, and original-purchase events and never includes reading or conversation content. Premium retains pseudonymous entitlement, quota, attestation, request-state, feature-usage, and cost records to enforce allowances, diagnose failures, plan capacity, and report aggregate usage. Those records contain operation and allowance metadata, not full books, notes, prompts, transcripts, request-specific narration audio, or API keys. Published Studio audiobooks are public catalog files, not user records. Read the privacy policy for the full boundary.
How do I delete my data?
Deleting the app removes its on-device library and notes, so export anything you want to keep first. Short-lived Premium records expire automatically; contact support with a deletion question about remaining operational records.
Is my library backed up?
It's included in your normal iPhone backup (iCloud or computer), under Apple's terms. Premium operation content is sent only when you choose that cloud route.

Troubleshooting

Today’s Picks are empty.
They need one internet fetch to fill — pull to refresh or tap ↻. After that the daily picks are cached. For You can still include new episodes from shows you follow.
My key “doesn't work.”
Check three things: the key was pasted whole (it starts with sk-), your OpenAI account has billing set up, and the key wasn't revoked on OpenAI's side. Landfall shows the AI features as locked until a working key is present.
A book looks garbled after import.
Word documents survive best. If a plain-text book imports oddly, email it to me and I'll look — the importer gets better with every strange file it meets.
Something else?
verma.arun@gmail.com. I read everything, usually the same day.
